The concept of UNAI was introduced and implemented in MCET by our Principal: Dr. Jubilant J Kizhakkethottam. The inauguration of The Musaliar College UNAI Chapter, Kerala Forum of United Nations Academic Impact (KFUNAI) and the state level three day Camp, was held at Musaliar College of Engineering and Technology (MCET), Pathanamthitta on July 10th to July 12th, 2015. The camp, based on the vision of the UNAI was organized by UNAI Chapter of MCET in collaboration with KFUNAI. It was designed to provide theoretical and practical training to young participants, who try to imbibe the ten basic principles of UNAI.

In the words of United Nations Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon: “The Academic Impact aims to generate a global movement of minds to promote a new culture of intellectual social responsibility.  It is animated by a commitment to certain bedrock principles. Among them: freedom of inquiry, opinion and speech; educational opportunity for all; global citizenship; sustainability; and dialogue.”

Furthermore, UNAI aims to support the realization of the millennium development goals focusing on the reciprocal relationship between education and sustainable development.

  • Learn about UNAI principles and explore creative ideas using the concept of UNAI as a tool to inspire change in a variety of development areas.
  • Develop an intellectual networking.
  • Promote diversity and social inclusions.
  • Reflect their own perspective and approaches to development.
  • Share strategies, approaches, and best practices through the concept of UNAI.
  • Design an action plan to develop, implement and evaluate UNAI programmes in their communities.

Mr Saji C Thomas, United Nation’s representative travels world-wide to observe the progress of UNAI projects and its implementation in the educational institutions. During these journeys, Mr Saji gets chance to meet those countless young volunteers who is dedicated in working with these projects. During such acquaintances, he felt that they can carry out the projects wonderfully well if put under the guidance of a proper common forum, which should be the best platform where, they can learn best practices in the field and develop their leadership skills.

This led Mr Saji and KFUNAI members to conceive the idea of that common platform where  these youth, who have such great leadership potential, can come together in order to receive further training and support so that, they may go back to their respective communities and impart a better societal life , along with, their own professional progress. Thus UNAI camps are being organized, in order to promote the youth and also aims at upbringing the concept of “Globally One” or “Single World”, a world without any discrepancies or discriminations.

The camp was a huge learning experience for all the students. The objectives that were laid down for the camp were by and large met. The most important benefit of the camp was that the students learnt to work as a team. The food, weather and surroundings were different and the students interacted extremely well with the local community as well as adjusted admirably to the rural settings. The camp was a very good occasion for the students to exercise their social work principles and skills and the students benefitted immensely by the experience.
